The Faces - Live In London - 1973

Think about it? A band comes together from the pedigree of The Small Faces, and The Jeff Beck Group, during the late 1960's.

They are all broadly inspired by R&B, Blues, and good old rock'n'roll, and like a drink or two before, during, and after any concert. As a bonus each and every one of them can play their part to a very high standard.

I give you The Faces !

Against that background how can any band stay together for more than a few short years.

It is no wonder they were instant favorites of the UK's then premier DJ John Peel, and that their gig's have attained legendary status for concert goers of that time.

There is a good synopsis over on wikipedia (click HERE), that briefly captures The Faces history. This for me, with fond memories, was all about having a great time, unashamedly doing the rock'n'roll thing, with all the excesses, even if I was to young to actually join the party!

This is The Faces live at The Paris Theatre, London, on the 8th February 1973.

In Full Soundboard Stereo Quality enjoy:

A Trip With The Beatles - Ultimate Live Masters

In my own humble opinion the following live Beatles recordings are incredible.

Boots from the early 1960's are often disappointing, and for obvious reasons. They are not official, they are copies of copies of copies... you get the point!

The equipment used (even if professional) had limitations, often the crowd noise is more dominant and... OK this is over kill - point made !!!

However very recently some new tape sources of The Beatles have emerged, which are close to pristine for their time.

You may note the odd speed fluctuation or adjustment as some very tender remastering has been undertaken. However this is very much The Beatles as they sounded live in 1963 and 1964. It is a must for any Beatles fan, or fan of early guitar rock bands.

This is the track order:

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN - OCTOBER 24, 1963 (From best known source to date).
1. Intro 0'46''
2. I Saw Her Standing There 2'46''
3. From Me To You 2'01''
4. Money (That's What I Want) 2'59''
5. Roll Over Beethoven 2'19''
6. You Really Got A Hold On Me 3'07''
7. She Loves You 2'30''
8. Twist And Shout 2'47''

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - DECEMBER 7, 1963 (From a newly discovered tape source)
9. I Want To Hold Your Hand 2'07''
10. Intro - Money (That's What I Want) 3'51''
11. Twist And Shout 2'07''
12. From Me To You 1'15''

PARIS, FRANCE - JANUARY 19, 1964 (From a newly discovered and much longer source tape).
13. Beatles' interview at the Bourget airport 0'45''
14. (Trini Lopez song) If I Had A Hammer 1'11''
15. Robert Marcy's comment 0'50''
16. From Me To You 1'52''
17. This Boy 2'25''
18. I Want To Hold Your Hand 2'27''
19. She Loves You 2'49''
20. Twist And Shout 2'38''
21. Robert Marcy's comment 0'33''
22. I Saw Her Standing There 2'42''
23. This Boy (partial) 0'07''
24. Twist And Shout 2'35''
25. From Me To You (incomplete instrumental) 0'25''
26. Long Tall Sally 1'54''
27. From Me To You (incomplete instrumental) 0'07''
28. From Me To You 1'57''

I think I have made the point - sound quality as good as you can get, the actual performances, totally Beatles at that time !!!

Anorak Corner - Part Seven

Radio Caroline went off the air in March 1968, primarily due to financial reasons, and the impact of the marine offences act.

The ships (Caroline North & South) were towed to Holland and basically impounded.

In September 1972 the former Caroline South ship - the Mi Amigo, was purchased at auction, and was to become a museum. This was a smokescreen, as the ship had been purchased by those 'close' to Caroline. In September 1972, the ship was rushed out to sea, and dropped anchor close to Radio Veronica & Radio Northsea International (RNI).

This was the beginning of the great 1970's adventure. For a concise story of all that followed visit Radio Caroline, and check out the history section or click HERE.

In 1974 the Dutch passed their equivalent to the marine offences act, and Caroline again decided to stay on the air, and with nothing more to lose returned to the British coastline.

This was really the start of the golden era of Radio Caroline as 'Europe's first and only Album Station'.

The station had a large following in the South East of England & coastal Europe, and further a field after dark when the medium wave signal achieved further reach.

This is my first round up of music I associate with that period of the decade. It may not be totally accurate, but leave your anorak off for a moment and download some absolute classics. In the usual 'no particular order', I present some Caroline Classics...

A Trip With The Beatles - Lord Of Madness

Back in March I featured a couple of tracks from the 'Lord of Madness' boot. I have kind of got my act together since then, and am now pleased to share the whole album.

To recap - In 1968 The Beatles were both at Trident and EMI studios in London. Some excellent (performance and recording quality) material was created, final versions of which are found on The White Album.

Lord of Madness are versions in production, another piece of The Beatles history, for collectors.

The album comprises of:

01 - Hey Jude
02 - Revolution
03 - I'm So Tired
04 - Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey
05 - Sour Milk Sea
06 - Circles
07 - While My Guitar Gently Weeps
08 - Julia

10 - What's The New Mary Jane

A Trip With The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour

It's been some time since part three of 'a trip with the Beatles', for which I apologise, and no, I have not yet edited the 'Get Back sessions' to share, I feel another apology coming on.

So this is part four, and I make no apologies for this!

A twenty three track album, the copy I have obtained goes under the name of 'Magical Mystery Tour Outtakes', it is however far more than that.

Lets go interactive for a moment. If you have the time, read the Wikipedia entry for the Magical Mystery Tour (click HERE). It's easy to forget the 'TV' film version bombed originally outside the UK. and was panned by the critics of that time. It's a reflection on my personality I guess, that I loved it, it is however the music that in typical Beatles style has demonstrated longevity.

I think it reasonable to say that against the Wikipedia background, this series of recordings are an absolute must for all Beatles fans, and curious parties.

The album is as follows:

The Beatles: Magical Mystery Tour Outtakes.

01. Magical Mystery Tour (unknown take)
02. The Fool On The Hill Piano demo take 1
03. Aerial Tour Instrumental Mono Mix take 8
04. Blue Jay Way "overdub session"
05. Your Mother Should Know Alternate Mix
06. I Am The Walrus take 7, external. Monitor mix.
07. I Am The Walrus take 9
08. I Am The Walrus take 17
09. Hello Hello take 1
10. Strawberry Fields Forever Paul singing at the piano
11 Medley
12. Strawberry Fields Forever Kenwood demos: electric guitar composing sequence + mellotron & overdubs onto composing sequence.
13. Strawberry Fields Forever the wonderful take 1
14. Strawberry Fields Forever take 25
15. Penny Lane Brass Overdub.
16. Penny Lane mono mix
17. Baby, You're A Rich Man take 2 RS? - UK/Germany
18. All You Need Is Love TV, Take 58
19. Jessie's Dream Film Music
20. Magical Mystery Tour unidentified
21. Your Mother Should Know German stereo LP mix
22. Strawberry Fields Forever German stereo LP mix
23. Hello Goodbye German stereo LP mix

The sheer sound quality of this collection is astounding, a wonderful piece of history, that for all the wrong copyright reasons, could never be officially released.

Clearly there are many other 'takes' around, this collection has, at least surfaced and been shared, if you are sitting on any gems, go on - let us know!

Manfred Mann's Earthband - Philadelphia 1976

This is one of those moments in time. When a band introduces a 'new song', as they did during this performance, one that all these years later we know to be, a 'classic' of theirs, you can begin to plot that occasion with greater clarity.

Manfred Mann's Earth Band have never been superstars. I think it fair to say that was never the intended goal, indeed the choice was taken to move away from 'three minute pop songs' and chart hits, and explore more creative ideas.

By the time of the 'Roaring Silence Tour' they were however well established, but they did not fit that comfortably into any particular rock niche. A bit Prog, a bit rock blues, sometimes just Manfred Mann, growing a little older.

This is a recording of them at the Spectrum, Philadelphia USA, on the 15th October 1976.

They were, and indeed remain a recording band, one of those acts who seem to embrace a lot of contemporary artists, and not detract from the original idea.

They were pretty good to put it mildly - live, as the following concert confirms.

01 - Intro - The Road To Babylon - Spirits In The Night
02 - Davey's On The Road Again
03 - Time Is Right
04 - Father Of Day, Father Of Night - Captain Bobby Stout
05 - Blinded By The Light
06 - The Mighty Quinn
07 - Waiter, There's A Yawn In My Ear - Outro

(click on the links to download)

CLICK ON COMMENTS SECTION FOR NEW LINK (Original links disabled - usual suspect !!!)

The sound quality on this gig is superb, it was broadcast on FM, this is probably a recording of that broadcast, all I can say is, whoever recorded this had one decent tuner to say the least, and recorded it as if they were in the concert hall.

Some Manfred Mann Earthband Cd's HERE.

With hindsight they were typical of the bands Radio Caroline featured in the mid 1970's, and it is no suprise, they survived the punk revolution, because they were genuine, and not on the get rich quick bandwagon...

Aerosmith - Live In London - 1989

I have only seen Aerosmith live in concert once, towards the end of their 'nine lives' tour. They were superb.

This concert was from around a decade earlier, actually to be precise, the 15th November 1989.

Playing one of Londons best venues for so many, many years, the Hammersmith Odeon, was always a good choice for getting the crowd involved, whilst ensuring a lot of fans get to see the concert.

This was recorded during Aerosmith's 'Pump Tour', my guess is it's the second half of the concert, which went out live via the BBC in the UK at that time.

That said its one hour of Aerosmith, doing the business, in full stereo soundboard quality, so enjoy!

Songs played are as follows:

1.Rats in the cellar.
2.Same old song and dance.
3.Monkey on my back.
4.Don't get mad get even.
5.Permanent vacation.
6.Mama kin.
7.Hangman jury.
8.Dream on.
9.Love in an elevator.
10.Dude (Looks like a lady).
11.Walk this way.

Band line up was:

Steven Tyler - lead vocals, keyboards, piano, harmonica, percussion
Joe Perry - lead & rhythm guitars, backing vocals
Brad Whitford - rhythm & lead guitars
Tom Hamilton - bass, rhythm guitar, backing vocals
Joey Kramer - drums, percussion, backing vocals

SORRY THIS SHOW IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE - A REPLACEMENT CONCERT WILL BE PROVIDED AS A NEW POST IN DUE COURSE (yep i have lost the original copy - ho hum).

Check out Aerosmith's official website, with merchandise purchase options, and some excellent gear to enjoy (click HERE).

Hammersmith Odeon was just a few miles from my home for many years and I enjoyed some incredible gigs there, I am always on the look out for recordings from this venue, if you come across, or have some, I would love to here from you.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Hamburg - 2006

The Red Hot Chilli Peppers playing Fliegende Bauten, Hamburg, Germany on the 24th April 2006.

I am not a massive fan of the band, however I sense on this occasion as far as popular opinion goes, I may be swimming against the tide, with lead weights attached to my arms and legs.

That said having listened to this concert, I would not turn down a ticket or two, to see them live.

The sound quality is excellent (pre FM - stereo soundboard), almost too good at the start when they seem to be a little slow getting going (or is that just my ignorance).

01 - Can't Stop
02 - Charlie
03 - Tell Me Baby
04 - The Needle And The Damage Done
05 - Me And My Friends
06 - Dani California
07 - 21St Century
08 - Don't Forget Me
09 - How Deep Is Your Love
10 - She's Only 18
11 - Right On Time
12 - Californication
13 - By The Way (Apologies this fades out early)

I reckon a lot of people are going to enjoy this. (click on the links to download).

Billy Idol - Poplar Creek - 1984

Time to up the energy levels!

This is Billy Idol recorded live at the Poplar Creek Theatre, Hoffman Estates, Illinois, USA, on June 1st 1984.

Poplar Creek was an outdoor concert venue located in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.

The property consisted of 200 acres at the intersection of Higgins Road and Route 59.

When it opened in June 1980, the surrounding neighborhoods weren't exactly thrilled.

To appease them, the inaugural concert featured a very non-threatening John Denver.

By 1984 they may have got use to the venue being there. That said the whole place closed ten years later, maybe it took them that long to get over the 'rebel yell !'

This is Billy Idol recorded for a syndicated radio series at that time, so apologies for the appalling and 'quite cheesy' intro and the end 'really hip' DJ comments.

That said the actual concert is pretty nifty to say the least, and the sound quality is high standard FM stereo.

So Much New Music - If Only I Could Catch Up With The Back Catalogue!

Whats new or current in the Beehive?

Lets start with The Polyphonic Spree, who released their third album 'The Fragile Army' this summer. On this album they take their unique 'spaced out choral pop' a little towards the dark side. I think they are probably a love or hate group. I like them (to be awkward).

Links Removed - MP3 Policy.

The Polyphonic Spree - (The Fragile Army - 02) - Running Away.mp3

The Polyphonic Spree - We Crawl.mp3

The Polyphonic Spree - The Fragile Army.mp3

Now a band I am really keen to promote (you know you can still buy music & help new artists?). Bodies Of Water remind me a little of the aforementioned, add a touch of Beach Boys harmonies, and something a little maverick, and you are almost there. All of which probably does not help - elsewhere they have been described as gospel pop, so here's a few songs to clarify.

Bodies o fWater - Doves Circle the Sky.mp3

Bodies Of Water - Our Friends Appear Like The Dawn.mp3

Bodies of Water - I Guess Ill Forget the Sound, I Guess, I Guess.mp3

Visit their website with links to buying the album HERE.

Now to Auckland City, New Zealand, but not for long as they are about to decamp to the USA, in search of greater things. The Brunettes, are wonderful (apologies if you know all the stuff on this posting already). They have the album 'Structure And Cosmetics' out now, find out about them, and listen to more HERE.

The Brunettes - Small Town Crew.mp3

The Brunettes - 02 - Loopy Loopy Love.mp3

What can I tell you about The Moonbabies? They are from Malmo, Sweden, which is street cred enough in my books. Check the detail & listen to tons of their stuff HERE.

The Moonbabies - Sun AM.mp3

OK Grinderman have been out & about for a while now, but in order to ensure at least one download has some nasty teeth, and as an unashamed fan of Nick Cave's music here's a reminder!

Grinderman - 05 - Depth Charge Ethel.mp3

A few links to MySpace sites on this posting, sometimes however you can discover a real diamond or two there. I would like to pretend that I came across this myself tirelessly in search of new musical gems, sorry in this instance it was the excellent Gorillas v Bears blog that led me to this.

Golden Ghost and a Murder Hawk - The Orca and the Eskimo.mp3

If you check out something new today, check out Golden Ghost... and visit their site with more to listen to HERE.

Then there is PJ Harvey who I am delighted to say, has a new album out next month (September). From what I can find out, it is more piano based, but no less to the point than most of her music. One of the late John Peels favorites, it took me a while to appreciate Polly's music, glad I took the time too. This I understand will be on the forthcoming album.

PJ Harvey - When Under Ether.mp3

Click HERE, for a selection of some of the above Cd's or on the links provided after some of the artists.

Finally another unashamed plug for Coco Rosie, because I still find myself enjoying there music, a couple of months on from last shouting about them, and wondering why they are not reaching a much wider audience?

Coco Rosie - Rainbowarriors.mp3

Coco Rosie - Beautiful Boyz.mp3

Coco Rosie - Madonna.mp3

Or am I just missing something, a lot of visitors came back for more first time around!

Buy Coco Rosie HERE.

So much new music, if only I could catch up with the back catalogue !!!

Marvin Gaye - Budokan - 1979

Yet another little treasure. This is Marvin Gaye live at Budokan Hall, Tokyo, Japan, way back on November 13th 1979.

The man made great music throughout his career, and is synonymous with Tamla Motown.

As is widely known he also had something of a troubled life at times, and when this concert took place he was not far from rock bottom with both tax debt and drug problems.

However a true performer, he sounds great, and with a backing band that has real power & edge, this was a great show.

Concert was as follows:

Got to Give It Up
When I First Saw You
What's Going On
Who Is To Blame
Inner City Blues
Funky Space Reincarnation
How Sweet It Is
Band Intro/Trouble Man
Ain't That Peculiar
Yeah Yeah Yeah/Pride and Joy
Pride and Joy
Darlin' I Love You
Heard It Through the Grapevine
Going To Chicago
Need You Baby
Too Busy Thinking About My Baby
Distant Lover

He does say thank you & goodnight at the end of the show, however it is missing from this copy.

That said the sound quality is excellent (FM stereo sourced), and as previously mentioned the performance is superb.

REPLACEMENT LINK AVAILABLE IN COMMENTS BELOW (06 April 2009).

As is the custom, you have some Marvin Gaye CD purchase options HERE.

Johnny Cash - New York - 1996

This is Johnny Cash live playing at the Irving Plaza,
New York City, on the 07.09.1996.

In 1996, Cash released a sequel to American Recordings (1994), entitled Unchained, and enlisted the accompaniment of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, which won a Grammy for Best Country Album.

This live performance does justice to the exceptional studio work he produced around that time & thereafter. Sadly in 1997 the on set of serious illnesses, greatly reduced his live appearances.

Set list:

Folsom Prison Blues
Get Rhythm
Sunday Morning Coming
Ghost Riders in the Sky
Oh Bury Me Not
Never Picked Cotton
Rowboat (Beck)
Rusty Cage (Soundgarden)
Southern Accent (T.Petty)
Memories...
Ring of Fire
Walk the Line
I got Jesus in my Soul
Big River
I Still Miss Someone
Orange Blossom Special
Far Side Banks of Jordan

This is a superb recording of the show (stereo soundboard).

The Beach Boys - Fillmore East - 1971

The Beach Boys
Fillmore East
New York, NYC
27th June 1971

This concert, recorded live on the closing night of the Fillmore East, demonstrates the Beach Boys at a time when their live performing abilities were possibly at an all time high (no pun intended).

The original group members of Carl Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine, are all part of the gig, however by this time Brian Wilson had stopped performing live, and Dennis Wilson could not play on drums due to an injury.

Running order is as follows:

Bill Graham Introduction 0:07
Heroes And Villains 3:53
Do It Again 2:52
Cotton Fields 2:42
Help Me, Rhonda 4:14
Wouldn't It Be Nice 3:00

Good Vibrations 4:28
California Girls 3:29
I Get Around 2:31
It's About Time 3:50

Carl Wilson - vocals
Al Jardine - guitar, vocals
Dennis Wilson - vocals
Mike Love - vocals,
Bruce Johnston - bass, vocals
Daryl Dragon - keyboards, moog

Anorak Corner - Part Six

August 14th 1967. Possibly the worst day in the history of radio.

The marine offences act came into force in the UK, forcing all but Radio Caroline to close down. As a young eleven year old, I went through a rapid learning curve that politicians care little for those they profess to represent. The closure of Radio London really upset me.

I cant blame those who worked on the station (and the other offshore stations that also closed), the full weight of the law & government was against them.

Radio Caroline took the decision to continue, the beginning of an incredible struggle against governments, grey faceless 'officials', big business interests, and the elements.

Something UK commercial radio chooses to ignore today, is the debt it owes to Radio Caroline, (the BBC does give some acknowledgement at times). Still like it or not Radio Caroline continues albeit by satellite, and online, and has stuck to the same ideology, rather than sell out to profit driven radio, and those sad armchair anorak detractors, 'who all could do it so much better'.

As I said 14th August 1967 was a very bad day, however lets not lose site of some of the great times, and great music that stations like Wonderful Radio London brought us in the 1960's.

Winding the clock back to the 20th March 1966, lets dip into some of Radio London's 'Big L Fab Forty', (click on the links to download).

Number One: Yardbirds - Shapes Of Things.mp3
Number Two: Walker Brothers - The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore.mp3
Number Four: The Kinks - Dedicated Follower Of Fashion.mp3
Number Six: Graham Bonney - Super Girl.mp3
Number Eight: Eddie Arnold - Make World Go Away.mp3
Number Eleven: Neil Christian - Thats Nice.wma
Number Fourteen: Lou Christie - Lightning Striking Again.mp3
Number Twenty eight: Len Barry - Somewhere (1966).mp3
Number Thirty two: One Hit Wonders - Bobby Fuller Four - I Fought The Law And The Law Won.mp3

One of Big L's 'climbers'' that week, and soon to become a hit was:

Climber: Crispian St. Peters - I'm The Pied Piper.mp3

Or lets just grab a couple from the August 6th 1967 Chart:

Number Four: Alan Price Set - The House That Jack Built.mp3
Number Six: Keith West - Excerpt From A Teenage Opera.mp3

Then there was Sunday 21st August 1966:

Number One: Small Faces - All Or Nothing.mp3
Number Four: Napolean XIV - They're Coming to Take me Away.mp3

And the list(s), go on. When I was browsing through some of the Big L fab forties, I was reminded of different songs, and artists, and in no particular order, year, or whatever, here's a further remedy for the August 14th blues.

The Troggs - With A Girl Like You.mp3
Association - Along Comes Mary.mp3
Frank Ifield - I Remember You.mp3
Freddie And The Dreamers - I'm Telling You Now.mp3
Tim Rose - Morning Dew.mp3

The Sandpipers - Guantanamera.mp3
Lulu - To Sir With Love.mp3
Bobby Goldsboro - Summer (The First Time).mp3

The Runaways - Cleveland - 1976

Here are The Runaways, recorded live on the 19th July 1976, at The Agora, Cleveland, USA.

Why have there never been more all girl rock'n'roll bands? I guess by virtue of when The Runaways formed, and their style of music, they are often linked with the new wave / punk scene, whatever category you feel obliged to stick then in, they play a pretty nifty show!

Pink Floyd - Psychedelic Sound Check - 1994

In my little world, a small claim to fame is having been in the audience with my eldest daughter, at Earls Court, London, when Pink Floyd recorded the Pulse DVD. Like I say my little world.

Turning the sad level up to eleven, I still have a guitar plectrum used in the show, and given to me after, in my possession. Did I mention little world?

The 1994 tour promoting the Division Bell album was no little thing! In my opinion it was a fantastic tour, a spectacle definitely, the musicianship well crafted, and the gig I attended, plus the footage, and recordings of others I have heard, suggest the tour as a whole, was really appreciated by the fans.

Oh, I know there are those who say it stopped being Pink Floyd when Roger Waters departed, or even when Syd Barrett was dropped, and those who hark back to the golden years, whenever they were. However do you know what? I really don't care. There are more important things in life than becoming retentive over music...

So to the purpose of this feature.

I am pleased to share some of the sound checks ahead of the shows. These are full songs, played obviously without the audience, and some of the banter before or after, with the sound crew.

If you listen closely you may also notice David Gilmour 'adjusts' some of the lyrics.

Here's what the uploads consist of:

SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND
HIGH HOPES
BREATHE IN THE AIR
TIME
THE GREAT GIG IN THE SKY
LOST FOR WORDS
WISH YOU WERE HERE
MONEY
US AND THEM

Recorded live May 5th 1994 at the Tampa Stadium FL. during the sound check rehearsals.

TAKE IT BACK

Recorded live Sept. 25th 1994 in Lousanne. This song is an outtake from Pulse.

ASTRONOMY DOMINE (I)
ASTRONOMY DOMINE (II)

Recorded live March 30th 1994 at the Joe Robbie Stadium Miami FL during the sound check rehearsals.

The sound quality is absolutely superb - via digital stereo soundboard & mixed.

Van Morrison - Fillmore West - 1970

This is a classic Van Morrison Boot, (often called Van Morrison Rocks His Gypsy Soul) and sourced from the original FM broadcast of the show in 1970.

It's been in circulation for a long time, however it captures Van at a time when he was incredible, both live and in the studio, with the creative works of Astral Weeks, and Moondance under his belt.

He was on at Knebworth just a few years later, and I have to say, I was blown away by the performance, becoming a fan of his music ever since.

Performed in the spring of 1970 at the Fillmore West in San Franscico shortly after the release of Moondance, and not suprisingly featuring a lot from that album - please enjoy...

This is a very good quality stereo recording - worth a listen, if it's not already part of your collection.

REPLACEMENT LINK IN COMMENTS BELOW - 12TH MARCH 2009.

The Who - Tommy Tour - Amsterdam 1969

This one is special. The Who toured their then new album Tommy in the autumn of 1969, through to 1970, with gigs across the USA, and then on to the UK.

They started out in Europe, and this was the starting point.

Playing Amsterdam on the 29th September 1969, they featured some of their then best live material, and the whole of Tommy.

Pete Townsend seemed in a good mood, chatting to the audience a little, the whole performance was outstanding.

This was the original line up enjoying themselves:

Roger Daltrey - Vocals
Pete Townsend - Guitar & vocals
John Entwistle - Bass Guitar
Keith Moon - Guitar & vocals

I have used the cover of an early CD boot (silver disc) as the picture (click on to enlarge), however the recording I have uploaded is from another source.

REPLACEMENT DOWNLOAD LINKS IN COMMENTS BELOW (17TH OCTOBER 2009).

The music source is stereo soundboard, professionally recorded and cared for since 1969.

Spooky Tooth - Grugahalle, Essen 1969

Originally there was 'The Art', led by Mike Harrison on vocals and Luther Grosvenor on guitar. They then met American keyboardist Gary Wright and changed name to Spooky Tooth.

They first recorded It's All About (Island, 1968). For those who look for the roots of progressive rock, and the harder edged likes of Led Zeppelin, your starting place could well be Spooky Tooth.

Spooky Two (1969) delivered a mixture of heavy blues with guitar and organ both to the fore, and some more AOR sounding material. Both albums are worth checking out, or one of the 'best of' collections.

This is a recording of the band live in 1969 at Grugahalle, Essen, Germany.

The concert is as follows:

01 - Something To Say
02 - I Am The Walrus
03 - The Wrong Time
04 - I Wanna Be Free
05 - Son Of Your Father
06 - Better By You, Better Than Me
07 - Alone
08 - Soulful Lady

When it comes to Beatles covers, I would personally say that their version of 'I Am The Walrus' is outstanding, the studio version is a must have.

The concert recording is soundboard stereo quality, excellent in other words, not bad considering it's 38 years old!

Anorak Corner - Part Five

I was eight years old, when I was introduced to 'pirate radio'.

The youngest of four, I had older siblings to acquaint me with what was new, or current !

However to this day I remember sitting excitedly as a friend of my eldest brother, sat and tuned my dad's radiogram into Radio London.

Telling me that this was a brand new radio station, seemed interesting enough, especially one that was playing pop music.

To find out they were pirates, on a boat, without a licence, and battling against the horrible British authorities, that refused to play hardly any pop tunes on the BBC, was something else !

So I have my eldest brothers best friend of 1964 to blame for the enormous anorak, that has grown around my shoulders since that venerable day, when an eight year old took his first steps into 'watery wireless' land.

If you want the offshore radio history of the 1960's for the UK, check out Radio Caroline or Radio London's web sites, these are good starting places. If sadly you are cursed with an anorak, there are more, and you will find them (the force is strong in this one - as they say in Star Wars).

The purpose of this blog is music.

So I recently tried to remember songs I associated with the offshore stations when I first listened to them. To my suprise when I checked, a good number of the songs were from 1965.

Not suprisingly The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, The Kinks, and a few more 'less street cred' artists sprung to mind.

Here are some of the others. Not all from 1965, but a reflection of what I thought was from the early days, of my listening to the offshore radio stations, in those truly golden and more innocent days.

(MP3 policy - Links have expired).

Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons - Rag Doll.mp3

Len Barry - 1-2-3 (1965).mp3

Hedgehoppers Anonymous - It's good news Week.mp3

Chris Andrews - To whom it concerns.mp3

The Shirelles - I Didnt Mean To Hurt You.mp3

New Vaudeville Band - Winchester Cathedral.mp3

Lee Dorsey - Working In a Coal Mine - 1966.mp3

Bob Dylan - Like A Rolling Stone(1).mp3

This is just 'a toe in the water', some of the music, that my brain recalled without to much effort. You are welcome to add more via the comment feature at the bottom of this piece.

A small collection of superb and very focussed 1960's Cd's are available HERE.

David Bowie - Montreal Canada - 1983

David Bowie played the Montreal Forum, Montreal, Quebec, on the 07/12/1983, part of the Serious Moonlight world tour.

Described as the early and late shows, this was in fact one performance with a twenty minute intermission in the middle.

The band line up was:

David Bowie - vocals, guitar
David LeBott - keyboards
Lenny Pickett - saxophone
Stan Harrison - baritone sax
Steve Elson - tenor sax
Carlos Alomar - guitar
Earl Slick - lead guitar
Carmen Rojas - bass
Tony Thompson - drums
Joyce and Kevin Simms - backing vocals

This was a much recovered David Bowie, with Berlin and his well known cocaine problems behind him, and a superb band supporting him.

The tour was a mix of the more commercial 'Berlin era' music, some of his greatest hits, and the then current, Nile Rodgers produced Lets Dance album.

The early show on this occasion consisted of:

Look Back In Anger 3:17
Breaking Glass 2:56
Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) 3:32
Rebel Rebel 2:27
Heroes 5:05
What In The World 3:59
Life On Mars? 4:07
Sorrow 2:49
Golden Years 3:38
Fashion 2:51
Let's Dance 4:44
Red Sails 3:37
China Girl 5:16
White Light / White Heat 5:47

The late show was as follows:

Station To Station 9:00
Cracked Actor 3:23
Ashes To Ashes 3:41
Space Oddity 5:16
Band Introduction 1:37
Young Americans 5:33
Cat People (Putting Out Fire) 4:14
TVC 15 3:53
Fame 4:58
Star 2:37
Stay 9:01
The Jean Genie 7:01
I Can't Explain 2:48
Modern Love 4:24

This was an excellent performance, so enjoy!

The sound recording is excellent and professional in quality.

Roam Around The World

If you had told me five years ago, I would currently be listening to bands and artist's from Belgium, Brazil, or musical genres with there roots clearly in folk music, and whats more enjoying them, I would have doubted it.

Greater access to different artists, and genres though the myriad of musical blogs, has definitely driven this.

The music press, has seen it's position as 'breaker of new artists' removed, I wonder how much time journalists spend searching blogs, as opposed to listening to new releases these days?

Anyway, this post does have an international flavour, hardly surprising as the likes of the excellent Filles Sourires blog, is a regular visiting place for myself.

Brazil's Cansei De Ser Sexy (CSS), have definitely made an impression in Europe over the last twelve months, I'm sure that anyone who was at Glastonbury, or following events on the BBC, will have registered them !!!

Links Removed - MP3 Policy.

CSS - Alala.mp3

CSS - Lets Make Love and Listen to Death From Above.mp3

CSS - Meeting Paris Hilton.mp3

CSS - Off the Hook.mp3

You can purchase CSS through Beehive Candy HERE.

Soy Un Caballo are a duet from Belgium. I like them. The 'Filles' blog draws comparisons to Stereolab. That may be so, but I have to say I think they have their own unique and very attractive sound.

Go on... be adventurous - I mean come on, an Englishman praising a Belgium band !!!

Soy Un Caballo - La Bibliotheque.mp3

Soy Un Caballo - Passer Des Jours.mp3

More information and even the chance to buy HERE.

I know absolutely nothing about Adeline Moreau, beyond what you can find out on her My Space site. I really like this song along apparently with Kate Bush and Bjork. Good enough for me !

Adeline Moreau - En Avril.mp3

Find out more HERE.

I know even less about Pink Martini, beyond the fact I uploaded it thinking this is good. I will attempt to do this justice, and add the appropriate links asap.

Pink Martini - Sympathique.mp3

Tickley Feather is from Philadelphia USA. She reminds me of one of my all time favorite artists. Don't you just hate it when someone names a band, you listen to the artist who supposedly sounds like them, and they have no resemblance at all! So I will keep the details to myself.

Tickley Feather - Natural Natural.mp3

Tickley Feather - The Python.mp3

Purchase options HERE.

When it comes to Marissa Nadler, I am an out, and out fan. The most obvious 'folk' link in this posting, I can go on for hours about her musical talents...

However this Buffalo Springfield cover (original 1967) is in a league of it's own (way above any premiership, or global league).

Marissa Nadler - Expecting to Fly (Neil Young).mp3

More HERE, and Marissa Nadler current album purchase options HERE.

I feel sorry for the mp3 fleecer's. You know, those who go searching through mp3 blogs, illicit down load sites and so forth, in search of what they are familiar with, and downloading like locust's.

They miss out on so many diamonds. Hope you found a diamond this time round, if not, check back, and let me know, if you have some gem to share.

Blondie - San Francisco - 1977

This is Blondie live, doing the late set at the Old Waldorf, San Francisco, back on September 21, 1977.

They sound so fresh, and energised, it's a terrific example of them during the 'new wave' era, prior to morphing into a fine pop band.

The debut album 'Blondie' in 1976 had been followed up with Plastic Letters, most of this gig is from both albums, plus there are cover versions of The Yardbirds' Heart Full Of Soul and The Doors' Moonlight Drive !

The Old Waldorf in San Francisco often had shows broadcast on KSAN-FM, not bad for a fairly small venue. Also previous artists soundboard tapes from gigs at the venue, were often played prior to the current nights live act.

The set list is as follows:

1 X-Offender
2 Youth Nabbed As Sniper
3 Fan Mail
4 Cautious Lip
5 I'm On E
6 Detroit 442
7 I Didn't Have The Nerve To Say No
8 Bermuda Triangle Blues (Flight 45)
9 (I'm Always Touched by Your) Presence, Dear
10 Contact In Red Square
11 A Shark In Jet's Clothing
12 In The Sun
13 Heart Full Of Soul (Yardbirds cover)
14 Playing With Fire Track
15 Moonlight Drive (Doors cover)

Sound quality is excellent - soundboard stereo - extremely clean.

Manic Street Preachers - Cardiff Coal Exchange 2001

The Manic Street Preachers performing live on the 8th of March 2001, at the Cardiff Coal Exchange in Wales.

As always when playing at home (Wales that is), the crowd are kind of partisan, maybe even easier to please, but that takes nothing away from the Manics on this occasion !

An excellent gig, and an excellent recording of it.

Songs performed are as follows:

1.Found that soul.
2.Motorcycle emptiness.
3.Kevin Carter.
4.Ocean spray.
5.The masses against the classes.
6.If you tolerate this, then your children will be next.
7.Let Robeson sing.
8.You stole the sun from my heart.
9.The year of purification.
10.Baby Elian.
11.Miss Europa disco dancer.
12.Motown junk.
13.Freedom of speech won't feed my children.
14.Australia.
15.You love us.
16.A design for life.
