The Faces - Live In London - 1973

Think about it? A band comes together from the pedigree of The Small Faces, and The Jeff Beck Group, during the late 1960's.

They are all broadly inspired by R&B, Blues, and good old rock'n'roll, and like a drink or two before, during, and after any concert. As a bonus each and every one of them can play their part to a very high standard.

I give you The Faces !

Against that background how can any band stay together for more than a few short years.

It is no wonder they were instant favorites of the UK's then premier DJ John Peel, and that their gig's have attained legendary status for concert goers of that time.

There is a good synopsis over on wikipedia (click HERE), that briefly captures The Faces history. This for me, with fond memories, was all about having a great time, unashamedly doing the rock'n'roll thing, with all the excesses, even if I was to young to actually join the party!

This is The Faces live at The Paris Theatre, London, on the 8th February 1973.

A Trip With The Beatles - Ultimate Live Masters

In my own humble opinion the following live Beatles recordings are incredible.

Boots from the early 1960's are often disappointing, and for obvious reasons. They are not official, they are copies of copies of copies... you get the point!

The equipment used (even if professional) had limitations, often the crowd noise is more dominant and... OK this is over kill - point made !!!

However very recently some new tape sources of The Beatles have emerged, which are close to pristine for their time.

You may note the odd speed fluctuation or adjustment as some very tender remastering has been undertaken. However this is very much The Beatles as they sounded live in 1963 and 1964. It is a must for any Beatles fan, or fan of early guitar rock bands.

Anorak Corner - Part Seven

Radio Caroline went off the air in March 1968, primarily due to financial reasons, and the impact of the marine offences act.

The ships (Caroline North & South) were towed to Holland and basically impounded.

In September 1972 the former Caroline South ship - the Mi Amigo, was purchased at auction, and was to become a museum. This was a smokescreen, as the ship had been purchased by those 'close' to Caroline. In September 1972, the ship was rushed out to sea, and dropped anchor close to Radio Veronica & Radio Northsea International (RNI).

This was the beginning of the great 1970's adventure. For a concise story of all that followed visit Radio Caroline, and check out the history section or click HERE.

In 1974 the Dutch passed their equivalent to the marine offences act, and Caroline again decided to stay on the air, and with nothing more to lose returned to the British coastline.

This was really the start of the golden era of Radio Caroline as 'Europe's first and only Album Station'.

The station had a large following in the South East of England & coastal Europe, and further a field after dark when the medium wave signal achieved further reach.

This is my first round up of music I associate with that period of the decade. It may not be totally accurate, but leave your anorak off for a moment and download some absolute classics. In the usual 'no particular order', I present some Caroline Classics...

A Trip With The Beatles - Lord Of Madness

Back in March I featured a couple of tracks from the 'Lord of Madness' boot. I have kind of got my act together since then, and am now pleased to share the whole album.

To recap - In 1968 The Beatles were both at Trident and EMI studios in London. Some excellent (performance and recording quality) material was created, final versions of which are found on The White Album.

Lord of Madness are versions in production, another piece of The Beatles history, for collectors.

A Trip With The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour

It's been some time since part three of 'a trip with the Beatles', for which I apologise, and no, I have not yet edited the 'Get Back sessions' to share, I feel another apology coming on.

So this is part four, and I make no apologies for this!

A twenty three track album, the copy I have obtained goes under the name of 'Magical Mystery Tour Outtakes', it is however far more than that.

Lets go interactive for a moment. If you have the time, read the Wikipedia entry for the Magical Mystery Tour (click HERE). It's easy to forget the 'TV' film version bombed originally outside the UK. and was panned by the critics of that time. It's a reflection on my personality I guess, that I loved it, it is however the music that in typical Beatles style has demonstrated longevity.

I think it reasonable to say that against the Wikipedia background, this series of recordings are an absolute must for all Beatles fans, and curious parties.

Manfred Mann's Earthband - Philadelphia 1976

This is one of those moments in time. When a band introduces a 'new song', as they did during this performance, one that all these years later we know to be, a 'classic' of theirs, you can begin to plot that occasion with greater clarity.

Manfred Mann's Earth Band have never been superstars. I think it fair to say that was never the intended goal, indeed the choice was taken to move away from 'three minute pop songs' and chart hits, and explore more creative ideas.

By the time of the 'Roaring Silence Tour' they were however well established, but they did not fit that comfortably into any particular rock niche. A bit Prog, a bit rock blues, sometimes just Manfred Mann, growing a little older.

This is a recording of them at the Spectrum, Philadelphia USA, on the 15th October 1976.

They were, and indeed remain a recording band, one of those acts who seem to embrace a lot of contemporary artists, and not detract from the original idea.

They were pretty good to put it mildly - live, as the following concert confirms.

The sound quality on this gig is superb, it was broadcast on FM, this is probably a recording of that broadcast, all I can say is, whoever recorded this had one decent tuner to say the least, and recorded it as if they were in the concert hall.

With hindsight they were typical of the bands Radio Caroline featured in the mid 1970's, and it is no suprise, they survived the punk revolution, because they were genuine, and not on the get rich quick bandwagon...

Aerosmith - Live In London - 1989

I have only seen Aerosmith live in concert once, towards the end of their 'nine lives' tour. They were superb.

This concert was from around a decade earlier, actually to be precise, the 15th November 1989.

Playing one of Londons best venues for so many, many years, the Hammersmith Odeon, was always a good choice for getting the crowd involved, whilst ensuring a lot of fans get to see the concert.

This was recorded during Aerosmith's 'Pump Tour', my guess is it's the second half of the concert, which went out live via the BBC in the UK at that time.

That said its one hour of Aerosmith, doing the business, in full stereo soundboard quality, so enjoy!

Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Hamburg - 2006

The Red Hot Chilli Peppers playing Fliegende Bauten, Hamburg, Germany on the 24th April 2006.

I am not a massive fan of the band, however I sense on this occasion as far as popular opinion goes, I may be swimming against the tide, with lead weights attached to my arms and legs.

That said having listened to this concert, I would not turn down a ticket or two, to see them live.

The sound quality is excellent (pre FM - stereo soundboard), almost too good at the start when they seem to be a little slow getting going (or is that just my ignorance).

Billy Idol - Poplar Creek - 1984

Time to up the energy levels!

This is Billy Idol recorded live at the Poplar Creek Theatre, Hoffman Estates, Illinois, USA, on June 1st 1984.

Poplar Creek was an outdoor concert venue located in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.

The property consisted of 200 acres at the intersection of Higgins Road and Route 59.

When it opened in June 1980, the surrounding neighborhoods weren't exactly thrilled.

To appease them, the inaugural concert featured a very non-threatening John Denver.

By 1984 they may have got use to the venue being there. That said the whole place closed ten years later, maybe it took them that long to get over the 'rebel yell !'

This is Billy Idol recorded for a syndicated radio series at that time, so apologies for the appalling and 'quite cheesy' intro and the end 'really hip' DJ comments.

That said the actual concert is pretty nifty to say the least, and the sound quality is high standard FM stereo.

Marvin Gaye - Budokan - 1979

Yet another little treasure. This is Marvin Gaye live at Budokan Hall, Tokyo, Japan, way back on November 13th 1979.

The man made great music throughout his career, and is synonymous with Tamla Motown.

As is widely known he also had something of a troubled life at times, and when this concert took place he was not far from rock bottom with both tax debt and drug problems.

However a true performer, he sounds great, and with a backing band that has real power & edge, this was a great show.

Johnny Cash - New York - 1996

This is Johnny Cash live playing at the Irving Plaza,
New York City, on the 07.09.1996.

In 1996, Cash released a sequel to American Recordings (1994), entitled Unchained, and enlisted the accompaniment of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, which won a Grammy for Best Country Album.

This live performance does justice to the exceptional studio work he produced around that time & thereafter. Sadly in 1997 the on set of serious illnesses, greatly reduced his live appearances.

This concert, recorded live on the closing night of the Fillmore East, demonstrates the Beach Boys at a time when their live performing abilities were possibly at an all time high (no pun intended).

The original group members of Carl Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine, are all part of the gig, however by this time Brian Wilson had stopped performing live, and Dennis Wilson could not play on drums due to an injury.

Anorak Corner - Part Six

August 14th 1967. Possibly the worst day in the history of radio.

The marine offences act came into force in the UK, forcing all but Radio Caroline to close down. As a young eleven year old, I went through a rapid learning curve that politicians care little for those they profess to represent. The closure of Radio London really upset me.

I cant blame those who worked on the station (and the other offshore stations that also closed), the full weight of the law & government was against them.

Radio Caroline took the decision to continue, the beginning of an incredible struggle against governments, grey faceless 'officials', big business interests, and the elements.

Something UK commercial radio chooses to ignore today, is the debt it owes to Radio Caroline, (the BBC does give some acknowledgement at times). Still like it or not Radio Caroline continues albeit by satellite, and online, and has stuck to the same ideology, rather than sell out to profit driven radio, and those sad armchair anorak detractors, 'who all could do it so much better'.

As I said 14th August 1967 was a very bad day, however lets not lose site of some of the great times, and great music that stations like Wonderful Radio London brought us in the 1960's.

Why have there never been more all girl rock'n'roll bands? I guess by virtue of when The Runaways formed, and their style of music, they are often linked with the new wave / punk scene, whatever category you feel obliged to stick then in, they play a pretty nifty show!

This is a copy of the second show, the Doors under took at the Konserthuset, Stockholm, on the 20th September 1968.

Jim Morrison is in feisty form, the audience clearly enjoying the concert.

Pink Floyd - Psychedelic Sound Check - 1994

In my little world, a small claim to fame is having been in the audience with my eldest daughter, at Earls Court, London, when Pink Floyd recorded the Pulse DVD. Like I say my little world.

Turning the sad level up to eleven, I still have a guitar plectrum used in the show, and given to me after, in my possession. Did I mention little world?

The 1994 tour promoting the Division Bell album was no little thing! In my opinion it was a fantastic tour, a spectacle definitely, the musicianship well crafted, and the gig I attended, plus the footage, and recordings of others I have heard, suggest the tour as a whole, was really appreciated by the fans.

Oh, I know there are those who say it stopped being Pink Floyd when Roger Waters departed, or even when Syd Barrett was dropped, and those who hark back to the golden years, whenever they were. However do you know what? I really don't care. There are more important things in life than becoming retentive over music...

So to the purpose of this feature.

I am pleased to share some of the sound checks ahead of the shows. These are full songs, played obviously without the audience, and some of the banter before or after, with the sound crew.

If you listen closely you may also notice David Gilmour 'adjusts' some of the lyrics.

Van Morrison - Fillmore West - 1970

This is a classic Van Morrison Boot, (often called Van Morrison Rocks His Gypsy Soul) and sourced from the original FM broadcast of the show in 1970.

It's been in circulation for a long time, however it captures Van at a time when he was incredible, both live and in the studio, with the creative works of Astral Weeks, and Moondance under his belt.

He was on at Knebworth just a few years later, and I have to say, I was blown away by the performance, becoming a fan of his music ever since.

Performed in the spring of 1970 at the Fillmore West in San Franscico shortly after the release of Moondance, and not suprisingly featuring a lot from that album - please enjoy...

This is a very good quality stereo recording - worth a listen, if it's not already part of your collection.

The Who - Tommy Tour - Amsterdam 1969

This one is special. The Who toured their then new album Tommy in the autumn of 1969, through to 1970, with gigs across the USA, and then on to the UK.

They started out in Europe, and this was the starting point.

Playing Amsterdam on the 29th September 1969, they featured some of their then best live material, and the whole of Tommy.

Pete Townsend seemed in a good mood, chatting to the audience a little, the whole performance was outstanding.

This was the original line up enjoying themselves:

Spooky Tooth - Grugahalle, Essen 1969

Originally there was 'The Art', led by Mike Harrison on vocals and Luther Grosvenor on guitar. They then met American keyboardist Gary Wright and changed name to Spooky Tooth.

They first recorded It's All About (Island, 1968). For those who look for the roots of progressive rock, and the harder edged likes of Led Zeppelin, your starting place could well be Spooky Tooth.

Spooky Two (1969) delivered a mixture of heavy blues with guitar and organ both to the fore, and some more AOR sounding material. Both albums are worth checking out, or one of the 'best of' collections.

This is a recording of the band live in 1969 at Grugahalle, Essen, Germany.

Anorak Corner - Part Five

I was eight years old, when I was introduced to 'pirate radio'.

The youngest of four, I had older siblings to acquaint me with what was new, or current !

However to this day I remember sitting excitedly as a friend of my eldest brother, sat and tuned my dad's radiogram into Radio London.

Telling me that this was a brand new radio station, seemed interesting enough, especially one that was playing pop music.

To find out they were pirates, on a boat, without a licence, and battling against the horrible British authorities, that refused to play hardly any pop tunes on the BBC, was something else !

So I have my eldest brothers best friend of 1964 to blame for the enormous anorak, that has grown around my shoulders since that venerable day, when an eight year old took his first steps into 'watery wireless' land.

If you want the offshore radio history of the 1960's for the UK, check out Radio Caroline or Radio London's web sites, these are good starting places. If sadly you are cursed with an anorak, there are more, and you will find them (the force is strong in this one - as they say in Star Wars).

The purpose of this blog is music.

So I recently tried to remember songs I associated with the offshore stations when I first listened to them. To my suprise when I checked, a good number of the songs were from 1965.

Not suprisingly The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, The Kinks, and a few more 'less street cred' artists sprung to mind.

Here are some of the others. Not all from 1965, but a reflection of what I thought was from the early days, of my listening to the offshore radio stations, in those truly golden and more innocent days.

David Bowie - Montreal Canada - 1983

David Bowie played the Montreal Forum, Montreal, Quebec, on the 07/12/1983, part of the Serious Moonlight world tour.

Described as the early and late shows, this was in fact one performance with a twenty minute intermission in the middle.

The band line up was:

This was a much recovered David Bowie, with Berlin and his well known cocaine problems behind him, and a superb band supporting him.

The tour was a mix of the more commercial 'Berlin era' music, some of his greatest hits, and the then current, Nile Rodgers produced Lets Dance album.

Roam Around The World

If you had told me five years ago, I would currently be listening to bands and artist's from Belgium, Brazil, or musical genres with there roots clearly in folk music, and whats more enjoying them, I would have doubted it.

Greater access to different artists, and genres though the myriad of musical blogs, has definitely driven this.

The music press, has seen it's position as 'breaker of new artists' removed, I wonder how much time journalists spend searching blogs, as opposed to listening to new releases these days?

Anyway, this post does have an international flavour, hardly surprising as the likes of the excellent Filles Sourires blog, is a regular visiting place for myself.

Brazil's Cansei De Ser Sexy (CSS), have definitely made an impression in Europe over the last twelve months, I'm sure that anyone who was at Glastonbury, or following events on the BBC, will have registered them !!!

Blondie - San Francisco - 1977

This is Blondie live, doing the late set at the Old Waldorf, San Francisco, back on September 21, 1977.

They sound so fresh, and energised, it's a terrific example of them during the 'new wave' era, prior to morphing into a fine pop band.

The debut album 'Blondie' in 1976 had been followed up with Plastic Letters, most of this gig is from both albums, plus there are cover versions of The Yardbirds' Heart Full Of Soul and The Doors' Moonlight Drive !

The Old Waldorf in San Francisco often had shows broadcast on KSAN-FM, not bad for a fairly small venue. Also previous artists soundboard tapes from gigs at the venue, were often played prior to the current nights live act.
